Oden Food vs pen and paper

Is it worth leaving the notepad behind? An honest comparison between running your restaurant on paper or in a spreadsheet and running it on a system. No marketing hype.

Updated September 2026. Based on both products' public plans.

Short version

  • Paper works and costs nothing. Trouble starts when someone else starts taking payments: you stop knowing what you sold, what walked out uncharged, and which dish actually makes you money.
  • Oden Food starts at $89 a month on the Basic plan, and that already covers tickets that reach the kitchen, a cash count that balances, full sales history, and reports on your phone.
  • If you only run a handful of tickets a day and you are always the one at the register, paper is enough. Once you have servers, two shifts, or you need to invoice, it stops being enough.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need a system if my place is small?

Not always. If you serve and ring up customers yourself and only run a few tickets a day, paper is enough and a monthly fee is not worth it. The turning point is usually the first employee who handles money: that is where the register differences nobody can explain start showing up.

How long does it take to load my menu into the system?

We load it for you. Send us your menu over WhatsApp (a photo, a PDF or a link) and we set it up with categories, prices and modifiers. Usually the same day.

What if my servers are not good with technology?

The order pad runs on the phone already in their pocket, and the screen is a list of dishes. In practice they pick it up within one shift. If someone really does not want to, they can keep writing the order on paper and the cashier enters it.

What happens if the power or the internet goes out?

If the power goes out no system works, and with the internet down Oden does not run today either: the offline mode is on the way and runs as a pilot with a few restaurants. Paper wins there, and it is fair to say so.

I run my business in a spreadsheet, does any of that carry over?

Yes. If your menu and prices are in a sheet, we build the full catalog from it. What cannot be migrated is your old sales history: that starts on day one of the system.

Can I try it without committing?

Yes. The first month is free on any plan, with no contract and no minimum term. If it does not fit, you cancel and go back to the notepad without having paid anything.

Want to try Oden Food in your restaurant?

Guided setup in less than one day. If it is not a fit, you can cancel with no lock-in.
