Which one fits your restaurant? An honest comparison of price, card fees and features. No marketing hype.
Updated September 2026. Based on both products' public plans.
Short version
- Square makes sense if you operate in the US, want one account for both payments and point of sale, and do not mind that card processing has to be theirs.
- Oden Food makes sense if you are in Mexico or Latin America (Square does not operate there), if you need CFDI 4.0 invoicing, or if you would rather pay a flat monthly fee than a cut of every sale.
- The math turns on volume: Square takes 2.4% to 2.6% plus 15 cents on every in-person charge. A restaurant running $60,000 a month leaves around $1,500 in processing fees, on top of the software subscription.

Frequently asked questions
Does Square work in Mexico?
No. Square accepts payments in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Spain. Mexico is not on that list, so a Mexican restaurant cannot open an account or take payments with Square.
Which one costs more at the end of the month?
It depends on how much you run on cards. Square charges little or nothing for software but takes 2.4% to 2.6% plus 15 cents on every in-person charge. Oden charges a flat subscription and zero commission from us: if you take cards you pay only the rate of the processor you pick. The more you sell, the more the percentage weighs and the less the subscription does.
Can I keep my card terminal if I use Oden?
Yes. Plenty of our restaurants keep charging on the terminal they already had and just record the payment in Oden so the cash count balances. You can also take card payments inside Oden if you would rather have everything in one place.
Does Oden have everything Square for Restaurants has?
For restaurant operations, yes: tables, handheld ordering, KDS, per-diner check splitting, modifiers, inventory, loyalty, QR menu and online ordering. What Square has and we do not is its US financial ecosystem: payroll, capital advances, gift cards and its own hardware.
Is Square's KDS billed separately?
Yes. Square's KDS app costs $30 a month per screen on the Plus plan and $20 on Premium, and the self-order kiosk runs $30 to $50 a month per device. In Oden the KDS is included from the Basic plan, with no per-screen fee.
